    I’ve been collecting recordings for 60 years. I was a professional musician for most of my life. I grew up on the great Reiner recording and was sure it could never be surpassed. I was wrong! Abbado gets this music in a way I’ve never heard before. The orchestra (strings, winds, percussion) negotiates every lick perfectly. If you love these overtures, you must have this recording.

    Great listening for a pick me up, while driving, or to inspire. Almost as good as going to Italy to hear Rossini’s work. The grandkids enjoy their copy, too.

    I largely agree with one of the preceding reviewers that these renditions are lithe and lean. I also agree that Reiner’s vintage versions are more skillfully played, to the point where that album would probably be my preference between the two choices, if I were forced to opt for one or the other. Fortunately, I don’t have to make that decision and have both the Abbado and Reiner on my shelf. This disc in particular is brimming with energy, and Rossini’s music truly sparkles from the enthusiasm of the players. In this instance, less (orchestra) can indeed be more. Recommended.

    Everything that you would expect from a well recorded CD. All the pieces are well known and of course, you can’t go wrong with a Deutsche Grammophon product. It’s a pure digital recording as in DDD. It’s a worthy addition to my classical collection of loved music.
